CEO's Office
Content, Content, Content– For many of us our mobile phone has become our portable music player. The success of the SonyEricsson Walkman phone and Apple's iPhone and iPod have proved beyond all doubt that content is mobile and that mobile content is a killer app. Music is just the start; video, television and games are all on their way to a mobile device near you. No matter what the business model, the content will require some form of rights management and security mechanism to ensure that ownership rights are respected.
Flash Memory Everywhere– Flash memory can be found on almost every consumer electronic device. Mobile phones, PMP’s and portable drives and even notebook computers are loading up on gigabytes flash memory. The benefits to the end-user are clear, yet increasing quantities of personal and corporate data are at risk of loss and theft. Flash memory’s penetration into the world of mobile phones and entertainment is based in part on the advanced security solutions deployed by card and component manufacturers. Protecting content is only the start. Equipped with Smart Card like security, the flash memory will soon penetrate new applications such as mobile commerce, authentication, healthcare and others.
The future is Open– Mobile phones have become mobile computers, to the extent that Smartphones already comprise a large percentage of the market. Open operating systems such as Windows Mobile, Symbian, OS X and Linux offer the subscriber an unprecedented level of flexibility and functionality. Yet openness comes at a cost, primarily at the cost of security. Again embedded security solutions hold the key to the development of the market. Today’s Smartphones are being equipped with a Secure Execution Environment allowing the user to download and install 3rd party applications on the device, all the time ensuring that these applications present no risk to the proper functioning of the device and do not pose a threat to its contents.
